Westside Health Autority’s summer youth programs are in full swing with dozens of young Austin residents participating in Youth Working for Success, Band of Brothers, or Set of Sisters. Though the programs target different age groups, each works to inform, empower and engage participants in becoming active citizens and leaders in their community. We believe people have the capacity and responsibility to be agents of positive change no matter their age.
Our youth are more than happy to accept this challenge and are vocal about the changes they’d like to see in Austin. Youth Working for Success had the opportunity to speak with representatives from the Chicago Police Department’s 15th District Precinct, where they learned about their rights and how to engage police officers when approached.
Participants from each of our summer programs have also taken it on themselves to Keep It Clean — a service-learning project they initiated to beautify the streets of Austin by cleaning discarded litter and planting flowers around Davis Park.
